BULLYING

What can I say??? There have been one too many signs this year that have led me to think that this topic needs to be in our face…

I have now come to think of bullying as a societal disorder because by one definition, bullying means “To treat in an overbearing or intimidating manner.”

A bully is, by one definition, “A person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people” You must understand bullying can cause irreparable harm on all physical, mental and emotional levels.

The reality is that it has always existed and always will. While reading that definition doesn’t it feel like you now have your eyes opened to the fact that we know or knew a bully and that we are unnecessarily putting up with this bull??? Unfortunately, we know via 24 hour access to the News that it can traumatize one for life or even so much as cause one to kill themselves and or others.

The difference WE can make lies in OUR society choosing to get involved as opposed to choosing to be a bystander (maybe not so innocent). I think that you will agree with me that bullying can and has led to hate crimes and ought to no longer be acceptable in our society. Nobody as a child thinks…”When I grow up, I want to be a bully”…By our society’s standards, it is acceptable to just stay out of it and not get involved because then we would most likely risk losing our or our children’s social status and that would just suck for us, wouldn’t it??.. Imagine that…Somebody having that much power over a group of individuals, be it work, home, school, Cyber space, extracurricular activities and even houses of worship. It’s socially acceptable to think that if one, heaven forbid, defend the bullied, they not only risk losing the friendship of everybody in that community but the risk that the hate continues and possibly manifests itself.

To drive these points home…One of my school friends told me this story last year. This nurturing friend of mine told me that she does not encourage her child to get involved in any type of bullying situation because as I stated earlier, her child will lose her friends. This real life event took place last year. A student was being mentally tortured by her classmates during a school play…Come on now…The teacher I was told couldn’t handle the situation well and thankfully this child has moved on to bigger and hopefully better things

Last week a friend of my son’s, “X”, told me that he was called retarded in summer camp last year…He was called this antiquated label by not only his fellow campers but by one of his counselors as well. Are we living in the 70’s people???? This “R” word is forbidden to be spoken of in my Special Needs world and I am a not only an advocate for my family but for others as well.

The other evening I was online with a Face book friend and learned that her child was being pushed down the stairs in school on a daily basis and nobody is stepping in!

Another child I learned was being pushed off a chair by a teacher and Principal because they have a health issue that causes them to fall asleep in school. Whatever happened to the “Pal” in Principal???

Think about this for those who feel less threatened by not getting involved….Wouldn’t you want somebody to help you or a loved one if they were being bullied??? Would you really want them to turn their back on you or your loved one and just move on??? ANYBODY, anytime, anywhere is susceptible to being bullied. I have quoted this before and I will quote it again….”We’re all in this together” (Well said HSM 1)!

We ARE accountable for not being strong enough to put a stop to the bullying in our communities. We all play a part in contributing to the wellbeing of others some of who could be our future leaders.

What would it take for you to join me in stopping this madness??? Do we really want to be responsible for our child ridiculing another for not wearing Uggs or Juicy??? It has happened!

I just find it bizarre that even today, going to the rescue of somebody in need is frowned upon by their peers. In blogging this, it all sounds so ridiculous yet we know its not, it’s very real and unfortunately it’s not going away any time soon unless we take a stand as a united front stop this insanity and teach our children well. It all starts at home and we know it…If not then how is it possible for me, and countless others to get picked on as children over their last name. How is it possible that in Kindergarten, my seven year daughter was told that sparkly pink boots were out of style and has since refused to wear them to school???? We as humans can ignore or turn a blind eye only so far…

Won’t you take stand and put the “bull” in bullying because isn’t this exactly what it is???….A BUNCH OF BULL!

More About Growing Pains

I don’t know…..My family and I were vacationing in Arizona last week and in some ways it felt like I wasn’t on vacation. Although I was I was out of my daily routine and having fun, I still had the usual daily thoughts validated by a recent conversation with one of my friends. All my thoughts go back to my children...Will they be ok??

My son Kevin (oh why not reveal his name, just don’t tell any kids ) is going into 3rd Grade and is what one would call a “student”. I am seeing his struggles though, as he is not having as much fun learning as the work is getting more challenging.

My daughter Sara (again, her name is just between us and not the kids ) is going into 2nd grade and so far so good although I wonder if she would benefit from a semi academic setting over the summer so she doesn’t have any setbacks.

I am told both kids are doing well socially and academically and I yet I ponder the future. KEVIN IS GOING INTO 4TH GRADE!!!!!!!! SARA IS GOING INTO 2ND GRADE...It ain’t gonna get any easier folks. Not that parenting is easy but it is without any doubt a joy I have never taken for granted and feel privileged to experience, tears and all! The other night while discussing Kevin’s upcoming 3rd Grade Science project, Kevin told me that “things are different then when I was little”. No kidding!

I wonder though..What does the future hold for these kids??? Will they feel confident enough to say “NO”????? Will they have teachers who can really measure up to OUR definition of teaching? Will my children be able to handle the peer pressure with dignity and yet still have a nice group of friends who accept them for who they are??? What is it going to be like when my kids hit puberty?? The whole locker room scene, both of them…I was a late bloomer (heck I feel like I am still blooming ), what if my kids are as well?? They both seem like they have the guts to say GFYS! When Kevin came home from camp one afternoon two summers ago, he complained that his hands were too small. WTF??? It was 2008…Who comes up with this stuff??? He was 6 years old at the time for crying out loud…

What is our world coming to when my child is concerned about the size of his HANDS and my daughter in KINDERGARTEN was told upon wearing her new sparkle boots, that sparkles aren’t “in” anymore…It’s Kindergarten, but, that’s where I was told at a parent meeting, “it” all starts.. Who knew???

All I can do is lay down the foundation for success by, along with other things, giving them strategies and guidance and pray for the best possible outcome.

I am feeling optimistic with the support systems in the schools yet I still worry Don’t you????

Life's Setbacks and Bounce Backs

Hi Everybody, I hope this new year is treating you all well or in the very least giving you all the strength to overcome your obstacles and achieve your goals.

So I haven't been blogging for a while because I found myself in another life altering battle, this one some call the "F" word, I call it what it is...Fibromyalgia (Chronic Fatigue and Chronic Pain to keep it simple).

I miss the high functioning life I used to have and now have to strategize to get back. I was writing ideas and storylines for my sitcom, looking for an agent, organizating and running semi monthly luncheons for moms of children with Special Needs, soliciting for my children's school auction, and most importantly being the fun mom I want to be. Now it's more of "I'm tired" before offering other suggestions to my kids instead of jumping right in as usual. I am grateful that I was well enough to celebrate Hanukkah with my family and was surrounded by family and friends for Christmas (even us Jews want to have fun) and New Years.

My routine has come down to waking up with pain somewhere, (yes I know I am lucky to be waking up :-), getting the kids ready for school while hoping Jan, my husband, can take them and then having the energy to empty the dishwasher and get at least one load of laundry done. I am grateful for when Jan empties the dishwasher as an additional 5 minutes of help creates less pain for me. Then it's off to Physical Therapy before getting hydroculators on my shoulders and back...You know when you are in trouble when you look forward to feeling the heat over the stretching :-).

Right now I feel like a weeble, "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down". There are reasons why I have experienced the joy and sorrow I have experienced on my journey and I know, life lessons to be learned. Yet, it's frustrating and time intensive having to take a step back from achieving my vision of what can be, to nurture myself back to my consistant state of proaction and optimism intead of using those traits to continue to forge ahead to realize my dreams of selling my television writing and enjoying the time I want to have with my family and friends while we are all still in the same state!

My hope for all of us is that as we forge on in our journeys is that we do understand so I have been told and have read, that we have life lessons to learn and sharing to give as we are all in this together and need each other to not just survive but thrive. My hope is that in times of challenges or even darkness that we can find the energy to tweak on what needs to be tweak and continue to be our proactive selves while living life to it's fullest potential. And in the midst of living life to it's fullest potential, that we embrace every joyful moment we experience.

Speaking of forging ahead, I find myself slowly going back to blogging, sitcom writing, looking for an agent, socializing, soliciting for our March school auction, organizing a January lucheon, and most importantly being the fun and nurturing mom and wife I have thrived on being. If I have to nap like a puppy, then so be it!

By the way, in wanting to continue to be the fun mom, I decided that it was silly to stop buying Poppyseed bagels...So what if they are a brain pain to clean up in between the wood floor slats, that's what Swiffers are made for, right? :-)

Friday's Thoughts

I decided this morning that I am fed up with the Special Needs label. Who came up with it anyway??...It just makes no effing sense! Special Needs??? What the hell does that mean anyway?? Sally from "When Harry Met Sally" ordered everything on the side, now that’s Special Needs. But nOOOOOOOOObody said she had Special Needs….In fact I don’t even think Special Needs was invented back then. Back then I know of somebody who thought of themselves as a "square peg in round hole"??? Did anybody ever stop to think that they weren’t playing a game of "Perfection"???? Or the time when I was talking to somebody and they said about somebody else I was chatting with.."Oh her elevator dosen’t go to the top floor"...Say what??…I didn’t know people were buildings…

People wanting to be made love to and not just f@cked laid or screwed, that’s Special Needs!

Then there's the ole Sensory Issues….Um, there are going be kids who scream when the lights go out…There are people who won’t “work for their food” and eat anything off a bone because it’s too much work????? What about people who refuse to sleep on the opposite side of the bed??? Then again, I stopped eating Lobster years ago because there was just something unappetizing about having this dead thing on my plate staring at me with it’s beady little eyes…then having to tear the thing apart and having to dig for food, no thanks :-)

Agree??? Disagree??

Go Figure!!!!!

I don’t think I nor anybody will ever understand G-d and the mysterious ways. How we can receive such amazing and life altering blessings, feel such overwhelming joy and maybe even relief and being thankful for those gifts one moment and yet at other moments find ourselves screaming “NO-O-OOO”!!!!! We’ve gotta have friends and family in more then name only for richer or poorer and in sickness and in health…Sometimes I think friends should make similar vows??? Maybe not??? Curious to hear your thoughts!

On a much lighter note…..Last week, My 8 year old son once again demanded a cellphone. He's 8, I am still looking to sell my writing, so I am home, why the hell does he need a cell phone???? So he can sit in class and get yelled at for sneaking in his cell phone to play Club Penguin???? I can hear it now…”Don’t tell me I can’t bring my cellphone into the classroom, you didn’t buy it, you’re not in charge of my cell phone.”

Then the Wii fights…This mornings conversation with my son….”Don’t tell me what to do with my birthday money…If I want to go out and buy Wii Resort I will. You can’t tell me what to do with my money. If I want to go out and spend 5o dollars on Wii Resort I can do that! I know the value of a dollar, you don’t need to teach me the value of a dollar. If I want a hundred toys, I am going to buy a hundred toys, you never buy me ANYTHING”….So after validating his feelings I told him that it’s ok to want more and there will always be kids who have more then him and less then him…The rant continued so I told him to go look in his closets and honored his request for a bowl of icecream to make him feel better…

So my husband just came across an electronic chess and checkers game set??? Are you kidding??? What happened to moving pieces across a f@cking chess board??? LOL “Fine get one for your son and get one as a gift… Fine, get two as gifts” UGH!!!

And finally….My son ate a poppy seed bagel for dinner. I asked him to please eat the bagel over the countertop because the seeds are going on the floor…So I just cleaned the dark stained hardwood floor again and yet again…I now have poppyseeds on my wood floor, my husbands slippers, my socks, my kid’s feet, the slits in between the floor planks, probably in my bed and by now in my kid’s bed. I am forever beholden to poppyseeds!!!

Listen to me real carefully….NO MORE POPPYSEED BAGELS IN THIS APT….

Sometimes I Wonder.......

I hope everybody is having a terrific over the hump day!!!

The things people say….I heard yesterday that President Obama got caught calling Kanye West a jackass, when his mike was on during an interview break. If you wondered what he was thinking, now you know and if you didn’t wonder well now you know whether you wanted to or not.

So speaking of things people say, I am now including my son...While we were on vacation out West, I told my eight year old son, Kevin, upon asking for one thing after another such as souvenirs and another Wii game, that it’s ok to keep on wanting things, G-d knows I will always want something, like a lake house and as of Sunday with baby goats, so I guess that makes it a country house
:-)!!!!!!! I explained to him that if he wants new Wii games etc. that he will have to donate or sell a toy for every new one that he wants. I also tried something new…. I told him that he and I should start volunteering at a soup kitchen on Saturdays so that he can appreciate what he has and what others don’t have… He loved that idea, let me tell you, I was soo proud of him…So this is what he had to say....”I am not volunteering at a soup kitchen, I want to play on the weekends and have fun, it’s not my problem they don’t have a place to eat and the rant went on…..So much for teaching values to a Pre-Tween!!!…Oh, by the way.... No new Wii game yet!!!

Growing Pains

So I decided to put my six year old daughter Sara, into an acting, dancing, and music class on Saturdays from 10 am – 1pm. Ever wake up and not know where you are??? My husbands alarm went off at 7am, I knew the kids didn’t have school and for the life of me, could not understand why I was woken up! So I decided it would come to me and I would go back to sleep, it did. There was something on the show “Brothers and Sisters” where there was a scene where the family matriarch Nora was waking up one morning feeling blissful and all of a sudden reality set in….Ever have those moments where you just wake up one morning feeling like wow, I feel absolutely nothing and then wham two seconds later the stress of being, for some anyway, kicks in. It’s an unusual feeling.

So my daughter was yelling and screaming Saturday morning, saying she was stupid and didn’t want to go. After saying I know you are afraid and I am afraid too when I write, she started going thru the motions of getting ready, resisting me along the way.

So long story short we got to her class and after clinging onto me for five minutes…she tells me to leave!!!!!!! I told her I loved her and left…another thought came true…That this year my kids will be starting school as one person and coming out as another, my kids who I probably won’t even recognize when they “graduate” in June. I walked out with a great sense of accomplishment and loss. It turns out she did well and will hopefully continue until the semester ends in December.

My children are Early Intervention babies. It took years to get them to talk; walking for them was the easy part. Now I, like others are constantly telling them to sit down and keep quiet!  I have always wanted to foster their need for independence as much as I can and sometimes it can make us nuts because they want to do everything. Now I embrace the fact that eventually our family cuddles will come to an end some day and want time to stand still for a few seconds so I can still enjoy them while they are young.

We want them to grow up to be these wonderful human beings and yet we still somehow find a way to keep them young because it isn’t necessarily them, but maybe us who aren’t ready to let go.

It’s such a conflicting set of emotions “People like Us” have, don’t you think????

Life and What We Make of It

Hi Everybody, I hope this day is going ok for you. I hesitate to say great because, well it's kinda hard for it to be great considering it IS 9/11 but because we are all surviving and thriving we can make this day better for us in overcoming our obstacles and achieving our goals. With the risk of sounding dumb I am going to go out on a limb here as I have total confidence that you will put me in my place :-)

I think everybody has similar thoughts on how they ought to view a criminally tragic (does that make sense) anniversary, (yowzer, plane flying overhead as I write this, creepy) such as today.

Do we think, hug the ones we love and tell them that you love them??? Do we look at how so many lives have been helped or even saved because of the charities created in memory of 9/11 victims? Hmm, I never thought about that one before...Do we take stock of our lives and just change careers, spouses, residences, etc. possibly on a lark, while we can before we regret not fulfilling our passions?? My latest expression has been "Just do it, but responsibly". Go after your dreams, but be sure you can handle your cost of living expenses, forget about just being able to pay the bills.

Feel the fear, do it anyway, responsibly, and just go for it as we have just one life to live! If you need hand holding, so... go hold someone's hand! :-)

What do you think??? How should we give 9/11 meaning to our lives or should we?? Why do some of us have the need to give THIS day meaning or even feel the need to reevaluate their lives??? Why not just think......"It is what it is", sh*t happens"...

Back To School

What a sigh of relief. Yesterday was my children's first day back at school; My son is in 3rd Grade and my daughter is in 1st Grade. Luckily they liked their teachers, listened, learned and had fun. It is now Day 2... I hope the "Honeymoon Phase" lasts for a little while. So....What are your thoughts on this whole back to school experience??? :-)
